Celta Vigo began their preseason fixture schedule with a 1-1 draw against Málaga CF in a friendly played this Wednesday in Marbella. The Sky Blues' goal came in the second half from winger Carles Pérez, who cancelled out the opener from Málaga's Miguel Rodríguez.
Manager Claudio Giráldez used the match to give minutes to a large number of players, splitting the game into two distinct halves. He fielded an eleven with several familiar first-team faces in the first period, before making mass changes after the break to observe other options, including several academy players.
Málaga, who compete in Primera Federación, took the lead before halftime. Miguel Rodríguez finished a team move to beat Celta goalkeeper Iván Villar. Celta Vigo, who showed better rhythm in the second half, found the equaliser thanks to a good combination down the right flank that ended with a cross-shot from Carles Pérez.
"It's the first step, the objective is to pick up physical shape and competitive rhythm," Giráldez said after the match. The Galician coach positively valued the attitude and work of the entire group throughout the ninety minutes.
The team continues its training camp on the Costa del Sol, where they are scheduled to play at least one more preparation match before returning to Vigo. Players who were not in the camp, due to international commitments or personal leave, will gradually rejoin training.
Celta Vigo's next challenge will be the first matchday of LaLiga EA Sports, which starts in mid-August.
