Sebastián Cáceres has returned to Vigo with pubis problems after leaving the Uruguay national team camp. The Celta Vigo centre-back felt discomfort in recent days and missed Uruguay's 1-4 friendly defeat to South Korea.
The Uruguayan federation confirmed the situation in a statement. "The Celta de Vigo footballer is experiencing discomfort in the pubis that has prevented him from participating normally in this FIFA date," the body said. "In coordination with his club, he will return to Spain to continue his recovery".
Medical tests to determine the extent
Cáceres will now undergo evaluation by Celta's medical staff to determine the severity of the pubalgia and a recovery timeline. The player, who joined the club at the close of the transfer window, had started the team's last two La Liga matches.
His absence adds to three other players on the sidelines, leaving manager Claudio Giráldez with a serious defensive headache. Miguel Román and Jones El-Abdellaoui are injured, the latter after undergoing arthroscopy in Norway. Captain Iago Aspas is also out, though he could receive medical clearance next week.
This crisis comes at a tricky time for a Celta side sitting 14th in La Liga with seven points. The team faces a congested schedule after the international break, with a key fixture against sixth-placed Alavés up next on 18 October.
Celta's last outing was a 1-1 draw with Getafe, part of a run of five matches yielding one win, three draws and one defeat. The absence of Cáceres, whose progress will be monitored daily, presents a fresh hurdle in the search for defensive solidity.
