Celta Vigo accumulates €50m in losses since 2020

The president of the club, Marian Mouriño, admitted on Thursday that she was "a bit" concerned about the possibility of putting Celta Vigo in "red numbers", pointing out that they need to "make an effort" to prevent the club from continuing to lose money. "A football club does not have to give profits because it does not distribute dividends. I would be very calm if the club neither lost nor gained money, and that's what we're all working on and making an effort. The club is solid in terms of treasury, in terms of debt, but you can't continue to lose money for many years", he explained during a long press conference. Celta Vigo has accumulated more than €50m in losses since 2020, encasing a five-year period with continuous red numbers, except for a small surplus in the 2021-2022 season. Despite this, the club's majority shareholder made it clear that they will not sell their best players. "We will not sell for the sake of selling. We will not force ourselves to sell if the player and the club are not convinced that it is a good decision for both parties. We have made a very good economic management. The European income has also helped us in this management. We have decided that we prefer to present losses that are controlled by the club rather than making sales that we are not convinced about by both parties", he declared. In a long press conference, Mouriño lamented that the club will close the exercise with losses of "a bit more than €10m" for not meeting "the requirement" of selling players for €32m. "Although the figure is bad and having losses is always negative for the management and planning of a club, I have to highlight that last year we sold for more than €25m and lost a bit more than this year that we have sold for €4m", he detailed. In this sense, he stated that the salary cap for the 2026-2027 season "will be lowered a bit" from what was granted for not meeting that average sales. "Last year we had, more or less, over €91m granted. We had €80m and, despite this, we had to sell for €32m. This year it will be lowered to approximately €88m, but our idea is to continue with those €80m in the first team", he sentenced. Currently, Celta Vigo is in 6th place in the League, with 44 points, 11 wins, 11 draws and 9 losses in 31 games. Despite the losses, the club's president assured that they will not sell players for the sake of selling.
