Fer López Returns to Celta Vigo
Celta Vigo has announced that Fer López will return to the club on loan, just six months after he left for Wolverhampton Wanderers in a £19.5 million transfer.
Since joining Molineux, López has only started three Premier League games and made seven substitute appearances, making little impact under current head coach Rob Edwards. Since Christmas, the Spanish player has featured in just 20 minutes across two substitute appearances in seven matches for Wolves.
Loan Deal and Future Prospects
Celta Vigo will pay López's entire salary during his time at the club, while Celta will also pay Wolverhampton a small loan fee. There is no option to buy included in this deal.
Celta Vigo are currently seventh in La Liga, behind Real Betis and just outside a European qualification spot by goal difference.
Analysis of Wolves' Failed Transfer Plan
López's return to Spain after such few appearances in the Premier League seems emblematic of the chaotic and ineffective business that the club conducted last summer.
Although López has shown flashes of his obvious talent and vision, he has struggled to keep up with the pace and athleticism required at the highest level. Additionally, he has lacked the defensive discipline necessary for competition at this level.
The fact that Wolves spent almost £20 million on a young player who made just seven La Liga starts and was their first signing of the summer, only to find him so unsuited to their demands, sums up the failures of a window that former executive chairman Jeff Shi described as 'good'.
While there is no option to buy included in this loan deal, serious questions now arise over whether López will ever play for Wolves again, given that the club are almost certainly heading for the Championship.
Wolves hope that regular game time back in Spain can help López rediscover his form and confidence, either to relaunch his Molineux career or increase his transfer value ahead of a possible sale. The other option might be another loan next season with the hope that Wolves return to the Premier League at their first attempt and López could potentially return with more experience.
